Most companies that
distribute electronic equipment have
to keep track of the serial numbers
of these equipments, which are shipped
out. This is required for warranty
and RMA purposes and to ensure that
the equipment is going to the right
markets.
In a manual system,
the operator will write down the serial
number of each of the items, which
are shipped out and then will enter
this into the back end system. This
can be a cumbersome process and could
cause errors.
The manual process
can be automated by using Barcode

serial numbers, which are bar-coded
by most of the manufactures, using
hand held terminals.
The steps involved
are as simple as entering the document
number that the items are being transferred
under, followed by scanning the serial
number. The numbers are then transferred
directly back into the back office

the user to ensure that the same serial
numbers are not repeatedly scanned
and if a validation file is loaded
to the terminal then the user is also
warned about the discrepancy in quantities
that he is expected to scan versus
the actual quantity scanned.
